There is much to like about the schools in LPOSD. The same can’t be said for school levy. We have recently learned from the superintendent that not passing the current “supplemental” levy could mean the closing of four or five schools, double shifts, and eliminating 300 jobs. We knew it was coming. This is the way bullies work — especially the levy “bully”. Feed me or I will hurt your kids. The School Board has allowed the current levy “bully” to grow to 33% of the operating budget. If this levy passes, we are looking at a bully of around 40 percent of the budget. But it’s for the kids. Really? At what cost?

So does the end justify the means? Does offering all kinds of extras, like field trips for home schoolers, a strong sports program, or a ton of AP courses justify the tactics of fear, manipulation, and intimidation? You, school teachers and staff, do you really want to prosper as a result of such tactics? You parents, do you want your kids educated on funding from the dark side? As a community, what are we teaching our kids by our example of being bullied year after year? How can we expect our kids to stand up to life’s bullies when we wilt in the face our own bully?

Like many bullies, this bully is bluffing. Vote the bully down. Vote the levy down, and we will have better choices in a month or so.
