Number ones roll, boys singles sweep in Sandpoint tennis' mid-week tune-up over Post Falls

A quick turnaround didn’t slow down Sandpoint tennis, as the Bulldogs boys’ singles players swept and the girls’ No. 1 and No. 2 singles notched wins against 5A Post Falls at home on May 1.
“Our number ones came to play today,” Sandpoint tennis head coach Kent Anderson said. “Jenny [Slaveck] played a tough match with grueling points, but somehow was able to win most of them. Charlie [Johnson]
But the scores from both Slaveck and Johnson’s matches doesn’t tell the whole story.
Although Slaveck in particular routed her opponent 6-0 in straight sets, her coach believes the matches was not as close as the scores would indicate.
“Her final score didn’t reflect how hard she worked,” Anderson said. “It was fun to see her end many rallies with crushing overheads.”
Over in boys doubles, Charlie Johnson’s play against some of the region’s toughest competition paid off: Johnson dispatched Post Falls No. 1 Jacob Nowack in a 6-0, 6-1 rout.
“He put it all together today and cruised to victory,” Anderson said. “He was able to move the ball around well while mixing in slices with top-spin drives.”
The No. 1 doubles teams for both genders took different paths to their wins. With Hadley Goodvin subbing in for Allura Livingston, who underwent wisdom tooth surgery today, the team of Goodvin and Tessa Beeman needed a set to find their momentum, but ground out a 6-4, 7-6 wins in the last two sets.
Declan Plummer and Christian Story — in their coaches’ words — “shellacked” their opponents in a 6-1, 6-1 win.
Sandpoint travels to IEL foe Lakeland on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
