SHS track makes final push towards Districts at Meet of Champions

Every track season follows a similar script.

As temperatures rise, times drop and eventually — to the chagrin of the team, which usually becomes close-knit as the miles, reps, jumps and long bus rides bring the group together — the roster wanes down to the top varsity competitors. In events like the District 1 Meet of Champions, gone are the seemingly endless heats of the 200. The junior varsity kids have paid their dues; they’ve ran the race and found the finish line.

Here, in the sleepy, windy vastness that is Post Falls, the Maddie Morgans, Bionce Vincents, Paige Davidsons, Seth Grahams and, for the first time in weeks, the Braedon Dressels compete.

Junior sprinter Dressel’s return highlighted a day in which Sandpoint placed in the top three in seven different events.

“Braedon Dressel came back today and looked good today; he looked sharp,” Sandpoint Track and Field head coach Matt Brass said. “It was good to give him another week to feel confident going into regionals with a couple races under his belt.”

Dressel, who has been out with a quad injury, made his return by running the 100, 200 and a leg of Sandpoint’s third-place 4x100 relay team. Not only that, Dressel’s 23.60 in the 200 won his heat and set a new PR going into districts.

Over in longer events, Jett Lucas, Nikolai Braedt, Bionce Vincent and Seth Graham took home medals (or t-shirts) for their performances in the 1600 and 800 meter races. Bulldogs led the boys’ 1600 from wire-to-wire: Braedt and Lucas went out in a blistering 63-second first lap, settled in and gapped the field to finish neck-and-neck. Lucas would out-kick his equal this time around in a 4:39.26 PR.

“For distance, the thing we tried to focus on is having kids run one or two marquee events instead of bludgeoning them with a heavy workload before districts,” Matt Brass said. “The events we were in were really competitive and the kids did really well.”

Aside from the usual suspects, several newcomers stood out. Freshman Jillian Primgaard placed seventh in the 400 with a 1:04.53 — less than a second behind 4A IEL leader Addisen Kiefer.

The Bulldogs will run at districts next Thursday at Coeur d’Alene High School.
