| May 10, 2019 1:00 AM

The Venerable Thubten Chonyi, a Buddhist nun from Sravasti Abbey in Newport, Wash., will speak on “ What the Buddha Taught and Why it Matters Today” at the Gardenia Center Sunday Service, 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 19. The Gardenia Center, 400 Church St., is a welcoming, non-denominational spiritual community in Sandpoint.

Shakyamuni Buddha, founder of the Buddhist faith, lived and taught in India nearly 2,600 years ago. His practical, down-to-earth teachings for developing happiness and eliminating suffering are as useful today as ever. Ven. Chonyi has been involved with Sravasti Abbey since its founding in 2003. She regularly shares Buddha’s teachings in secular and religious settings, where she highlights the practices that people of any faith can use to find greater meaning in their lives.

Sravasti Abbey is a monastery in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Founder Venerable Thubten Chodron is an internationally known teacher and author, who has studied with His Holiness the Dalai Lama for over 40 years. She is the author of over 20 books including a series she is co-authoring with the Dalai Lama called The Library of Wisdom and Compassion.
