Honk if you like this mama

| May 11, 2019 1:00 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — With Mother’s Day fast approaching, Coeur d’AlenePress subscriber Skip Fuller thought this mom worthy of your attention.

“My spouse and son just got back from a walk around the dock at The Resort and showed me a picture of a Canada goose that has set up a nest on one of the bridge pillars in clear view of the many walkers who go by there each day — a number that you know will increase exponentially over the next few weeks when the tourists start pouring into town,” Fuller said Thursday.

He’s right. This mama, presumably presiding over her soon-to-be tribe, isn’t a bit bashful. And that’s why Mr. Fuller went on to suggest that perhaps readers could have fun with a naming contest for Cd’A’s now famous Mother Goose. The winner, as selected by Press editorial staff, will be honored in print and treated to a grand Goosey dessert for two at Dockside restaurant. Oops — that’s Gooeys dessert for two at Dockside.

Send your Mother Goose naming suggestions to HollyP@cdapress.com. While you’re thinking up a goose one — we mean, a good one — give a few goose tidbits from tonsoffacts.com a gander.

- Geese fly in a V formation to minimize wind resistance and to conserve energy. This formation also allows them to remain close to one another during a long journey, increasing safety for all.

- Geese honk while flying to encourage all members of the flock to stick together.

- Geese are known to mate for life and are very protective of their partners and offspring. If their mate or chicks become sick or injured, the goose will often refuse to leave their side, even if winter is coming and the rest of the flock is flying south.
