May 12, 1969—– OPERATION SWEET TOOTH
Operation “Sweet Tooth” of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post No. 2453 will be packing cookies or other articles which can be sent through the mail for servicemen in Vietnam. Packing will start at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday at 406 South Ella. Anyone with donations or names of servicemen can bring them to that address or call Mrs. Leo Smith if they desire pickup of articles.

RETURN FROM PALM SPRINGS
Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Brown, Jr. have returned to Sandpoint after spending the past two months vacationing at Palm Springs, Calif.

WINS TOP PRIZE
New Farmin fifth-grader Margaret Morton was winner of the purple ribbon for top exhibit over all at the New Farmin science fair. She worked with microscope and presented drawings of microscopic forms.

BEN FRANKLIN DRINK COUNTER GONE
The old refreshment center in Ben Franklin, a familiar meeting place for businessmen, housewives and youngsters of all ages, is no more. Darold Sauer Jr. began dismantling of the coffee and soft drink counter last week so as to have the space for other merchandise.

The Cabinet ferry broke away Monday and went down stream about 600 feet before it was captured in an eddy and tied up.

KNOT TIED IN KAISER’S TAIL
The treaty of peace, submitted to the Germans at Versailles by the associated powers, reduces Germany to military impotence, deprives her of her colonies, restores Alsace-Lorraine to France and provides for reparation to the nations injured by her in the war. Parts of Germany will be occupied until reparation is made.
The allies and Germany accept the league of nations, but Germany accepts only in principle, not as a member. Germany may not have an army of more than 100,000 and cannot resort to conscription. She must raze all forts for 50 kilometers east of the Rhine and is almost entirely prohibited from producing war material.

NEW MAYOR
E.J. Elliott, Sandpoint’s new mayor, was born in Canada in 1876 and came to Sandpoint in 1904. He organized the Northern Navigation Co. in 1906 and in 1907 built the steamer Northern, the nucleus of the company’s fleet of five boats used for passenger and towing service on Lake Pend d’Oreille. Mr. Elliott entered local politics two years ago when he was elected alderman. He was elected mayor at the recent election by a heavy vote over his two competitors.
