Gary R. Mooney, 83

| May 16, 2019 1:00 AM

Gary R. Mooney, known to friends as “Moon Man,” or “Sarge,” passed away on May 11, 2019, at the age of 83.

Born and raised in Sandpoint, Idaho, he joined the United States Marine Corps at the age of 18. He was honorably discharged after 30 years of service. The ol’ gunnery sergeant spent most if his time enjoying hobbies of hunting, fishing, and golfing, but what he cherished most was spending time with his grandkids. He will be lovingly remembered for his quick wit, sense of humor, and joy he brought to everyone who knew him.

Gary is survived by his wife of 55 years, Chieko and their children, Shawna (Gregg) Prummer, Gordon (Michelle) Mooney, Teressa (Robert) Morsfield, and Gina (Marcus) Dunton; and his siblings, Marlene (Bill) O’Donnell, and Darrel (Roseann) Mooney. He will also be fondly remembered as the “best grandpa ever” by his 12 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Gary was predeceased by his parents, Gordon and Dorothy (nee Shoemaker) Mooney; and a sister, Sharon Bistline.

Gary’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff and residents at Life Care Center for their loving care and friendship.

A funeral service in memory of Gary will be held on Saturday, May 17, at 10 a.m. at Coffelt’s Funeral Home, 109 N. Division Ave., Sandpoint. Interment will follow in the family plot at Pack River Cemetery.

Family and friends are invited to sign Gary’s online guestbook at coffeltfuneral.com.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Coffelt Funeral Service of Sandpoint.
