Local Coast Guardsman honored for actions following crash

A local serviceman has been honored for his actions following a recent three-car accident near Cape May, N.J.
Michael Favor, the son of Jerry Favor, pastor of Victory Baptist in Sagle, serves on a small boat search and rescue response team in the U.S. Coast Guard. Michael Favor was recently honored for his actions following a three-car collision on Route 47 near Cape May.
According to a commendation given to Michael Favor, the Coast Guardsman was off-duty on April 21 when he observed a three-car collsion at about 11 p.m. on Route 47 near Cape May.
One of the vehicles involved in the collision flipped multiple times and stopped just short of Favor’s vehicle, wrote Lt. J.M. Harczak in the commendation.
“You immediately sprang into action by maneuvering your vehicle to a position that would protect those involved in the accident,” Harczak wrote in the commendation. “Additionally, you engaged your hazard lights to warn other motorists in the area and directed another bystander to notify emergency services.”
Favor then quickly assessed the cognitive behavior of one of the occupants and assisted them out of their vehicle.
“You noticed there was an elderly female passenger, and you determined that it would be safer for her to remain in her vehicle until emergency medical personnel further assessed for injuries,” the Coast Guard lieutenant wrote. “Your calm and collected nature was pivotal in ensuring scene safety during a stressful situation. Your actions and willingness to assist others serves as a model of others to follow.”

Michael is number six out of 10 kids in the family and is one of three family members currently in the Coast Guard. An older brother, Austin, is stationed in Washington, D.C., as an information system technician and a brother-in-law, Ramiro, serves at small boat station search and rescue response team in Fort Bragg, Calif., according to Jerry Favor
“So proud of the many young people who go out into the world and represent our community in so many wonderful ways,” Jerry Favor wrote in an email to the Daily Bee. “(Michael) is a product of our church, family, and community and most importantly a good example of a Christian who puts feet to his faith.“
