May 21, 1969 — FIRST PILING

The first steel piling, fitted on the first wooden piling, was driven into the ground beneath Sand creek Monday as Dale M. Madden Construction Co., Seattle started the major job of placing all piling for the new city Sand creek bridge.

EVERYTHING JUST PERFECT

“Measured from any standpoint — weather, total poundage and size of fish, numbers of fishermen, and Saturday evening crowd — the 24th annual Kamloops & Kokanee Week was the best yet,” said Jim Parsons, general chairman of the Lake Pend Oreille Idaho Club as he issued warm thanks to all who helped make the event a success. “We especially thank Eagles manager Bud Hanson and Eagles club members for their assistance in registering fish and staging the final ceremonies Saturday night,” he said.

SUNDANCE AREA TO GET PLANTINGS

A 12-man tree planting crew under Herb Johnson is working near Pearson creek, a tributary of Pack River, taking part in a major spring tree planting for the Sandpoint Ranger District of the Kaniksu National Forest.

The district is planting 1,360,000 trees on 3,638 acres this spring, all in the 1967 Sundance burn area. Species being planted are Douglas fir, larch, grand fir, spruce and ponderosa pine.

May 21, 1919 — GIVE BIRTHDAY PARTY

Last Friday 25 boys and girls gathered at the Mr. and Mrs. Bud Woodard’s and surprised their son, Homer, it being his 15th birthday. They gave him with a beautiful gold signet ring, and indulged in games until a late hour, after which ice cream and cake was served by the hostess.

STACKHOUSE UNDERGOES OPERATION

Dr. C.P. Stackhouse underwent an operation for appendicitis at Spokane’s Sacred Heart hospital Sunday and is reported getting along nicely. Drs. McKinnon and Wendle attended the operation.

SMALL FIRE THIS AFTERNOON

Fire this afternoon destroyed the small frame building at 103-105 Main street, occupied by the Bonner cleaning and dye works and the office of Al’s dray line. The fire started in rubbish at the back of the building. The building is damaged past repair.

SERVED WITH RAINBOW DIVISION

Ernest J. Lowry, the Rainbow division bugler for nine months up to the cessation of hostilities, returned to Sandpoint Wednesday. He mustered out of the 150th field artillery at Fort Russell, Wyo., after making the trip from the Rhine to Hoboken in 16 days. He was with old company A, but was separated from them, as he was ill with scarlet fever when his company sailed.
