SHS girls hoops kicks off busy offseason

| May 28, 2019 1:00 AM

There will be opportunities aplenty for high school girls in Sandpoint wanting to play organized basketball this summer.

The girls program is participating in a camp and summer league to help players develop their basketball skills in competitive atmospheres.

“We recognized a few years ago the need to have the girls play more games during the summer,” Sandpoint head coach Will Love said. “It is important that our players get out of Sandpoint during this short summer season to play teams throughout the region and gain game experience for the regular season.”

Players in the girls program will play up to 18 games in June. The girls program will have varsity and JV teams compete in the West Valley Summer League for second season, with both teams playing eight games against teams from Idaho and Washington over the month. Varsity games are on Tuesday nights, while JV plays on Thursdays. West Valley also hosts a varsity tournament on June 21-22.

The girls teams will also compete in the Lady Griz Camp on June 16-18 where they will face some of the top programs from Montana. It is the Bulldogs’ sixth year competing at the University of Montana, where Sandpoint standout Madi Schoening will enter her junior season after red-shirting this past season with an injury.

The girls program will prepare for the next month with a three-day “Summer Kickoff Camp” on May 28-30 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at Sandpoint High School. The cost is $20, which includes a shirt.

The girls program will also hold a Youth Summer Camp for girls in fourth through eighth grades on June 24-27 from 9 a.m. to noon at Sandpoint Middle School. The cost is $50, which also includes a camp shirt. There are family rates for the camp.
