Here is the only local charity golf tournament primer you'll ever need

Now that the sun is shining, the kids are out of school and the tourists are slowly but surely flocking into town, summer is about to start, which also brings plenty of opportunities to pull that set of golf clubs out of storage and compete against locals on the myriad of local golf courses during the most picturesque time of year.

For those about to golf, here is a brief rundown of several opportunities to play for a cause over the next few weeks.

“Get Teed off with Cancer” Golf for a Cure Tournament

Where: Sandpoint Elks Golf Course

When: June 12, 9 a.m.

How much: $45 per person ($180 per team); hole sponsors are $220

Getting your boss’ approval to take Wednesday morning off to golf is difficult.

Getting your boss’ approval to take Wednesday morning off to golf — and, in turn, help local cancer services that benefit local families and their loved ones — might not be as difficult.

The Sandpoint Elks Club’s Wednesday Morning Womens’ Golf League will host a four-person golf scramble at the Elks Club’s 18-hole course. Lunch, green fees and one raffle ticket (for prizes TBD) are included.

Here’s the catch: Each team of four needs to have one person whom identifies as a woman. Sorry gentlemen; having another all-male golf outing would probably be lame anyway.

Opportunities for local businesses (or other groups) to sponsor holes are also available.

Fore! The Health of it: The 12th-annual NHHS Foundation Golf Tournament

Where: StoneRidge Golf Course

When: June 14, 1 p.m. (11:30 a.m. check-in)

How much: $100 per player ($25 to add a dinner guest)

Two days after getting teed off with cancer, perhaps golf for the health of it?

The NHHS Foundation will hold its annual 18-hole, four-person scramble at the StoneRidge Golf Course in Blanchard.

Proceeds from this tournament will go towards NHHS Foundation programs that benefit local school lunch programs (via the Healthy Kids Snack Bag program) and youth reading initiatives (via the Reach out and Read program).

As if 18 holes of golf and a barbecue dinner weren’t prizes in and of themselves, a litany of contests will take place during this jam-packed evening of charitable golf.

There will be prizes for the top three teams; both gross and net scores; a putting challenge; longest drive and closest to the pin (to the top woman and man); a hole-in-one challenge and a five-flags challenge.

29th-annual Selkirk Association of REALTORS Charity Golf Tournament

Where: The Idaho Club

When: June 21, 10 a.m.

Each year the Selkirk Association of REALTORS (SAR) gives thousands of dollars to local graduating seniors and continuing college students. In order to do so, SAR has held its marquee, charity golf tournament for the past 29 years.

Like it has been in years past, this year’s tournament is a scramble format with four-person teams. And as usual, 100% of proceeds go directly into the grants and scholarships fund.

Aside from the team tournament, one lucky golfer could win a car (make and model TBD) from Pierce Auto by sinking a hole-in-one shot.

Or, for a significantly more attainable prize, another lucky golfer can sink a 50-foot putt for a chance to win $1,000.

There will also be prizes for golfers who are closest to the pin, or hit either the longest putt or longest drive.

Each person’s (or team’s) entry fee includes greens fees, cart, lunch and live entertainment.

There will also be raffle prizes available for purchase. This year there will be a special live auction item, a chair from Snow Ghost, which was donated by Schweitzer Mountain Resort. All proceeds from the raffle will also go towards SAR’s grants and scholarship programs.
