Area students had a very special visitor recently as Smokey Bear made his annual visit to Priest Lake, Priest River, Idaho Hill and House of the Lord Christian Academy elementary school.

Every year Smokey appears to give gift packets with information and fire prevention materials to the elementary students and to give a message about campfire and other fire safety information. Also, certificates and prizes are awarded to the Smokey/Woodsy Poster Contest winning posters in the National Garden Club’s contest, both at district and state levels.

This year House of the Lord third grader Eliana Shukle won first place in the state for her poster. In addition, three Priest River Elementary students won second place for the entire state: Carter Blackburn, first grade ; Payton Dichesare, third grade; and Jayden Boone, fourth grade.

All West Bonner County first through fifth graders are eligible to enter the contest, which begins in September.
