Nov. 3, 1969 – PROUDLY WE SALUTE

A1C William D. Mavity, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Mavity, was named Airman of the Month for the 51st Security Police Squadron for September 1969 at his Okinawa base. His selection was based on superior performance of assigned duties and exemplary personal conduct. Mavity has spent two years in the Air Force and has been on Okinawa since August.

PFC Clarence Buckmaster, the son of Mrs. Dorothy Buckmaster, Sandpoint, was recently promoted to SP4 at Fort Shafter in Hawaii. He has been in the Army since Sept. 1968.

U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Chester D. Rears, son of Mrs. Harold Staael, Rt. 1, Sandpoint, has arrived for duty at Mountain Home AFB. A supply computer supervisor, Sergeant Rears is assigned to the 67th Supply Squadron, a unit of the Tactical Air Command. A 1960 SHS graduate, he previously served at Phu Cat AB, Vietnam.

TO BUILD 15-UNIT COMPLEX

Ken Durtschi, Coeur d’Alene, has obtained a permit to construct a 15-unit apartment building on the corner of Main and Boyer, at an estimated $135,000 cost. Four two-bedroom units will be in a two-story building on the Boyer side of the property. The 11 one-bedroom units will be in a longer building near the alley. Parking will be under a covered carport along Alder St.

Fred Bartlett is home from the navy where he has been the last three years. His parents had not heard from him for three months and were very worried. It was certainly a pleasant surprise when he walked in on them unexpectedly Saturday.

WEATHER DOING ACROBATICS

Recently area has experienced the most peculiar fall weather of years. A five-inch fall of snow Oct. 22 opened the bill like a revival of East Lynne carrying its own scenery. Then it warmed up. Oct. 28 it snowed again; four inches worth. And that began to melt away. Last night another couple inches of crystallized mist descended in our midst while today is capped by the blue-gray threat of more white paint for the landscape.

The mercury has flirted up and down on both sides of freezing, down to 8 degrees on Oct. 25.

SECOND NURSE ARRIVES

Miss Elizabeth Carlyle, a graduate nurse of Deaconess hospital, Spokane, arrived Tuesday to work in this county with Miss Hazel Gale, giving instruction in home hygiene and care of the sick to groups in all of the county’s larger community centers. When it was announced last week that Miss Gale had arrived for this work, such a volume of applications poured in that it was necessary to engage a second nurse. To date, 16 classes have been organized in the county.
