BLM begins fuel reduction work

SAGLE —The Bureau of Land Management is working to reduce hazardous fuels and improve forest health conditions at the Gamlin Recreation Area east of Sagle.

A fuel break was recently completed on 66 acres of the east, west and south sides of the recreation area perimeter to provide a buffer between private residences and the recreation site.

Work began Monday, Oct. 28 to construct a temporary road to prepare for active logging operations in the near future. The Gamlin Lake Timber Sale focuses on improving forest health and further reducing hazardous fuels by removing dead and dying timber across 328 acres. The recreation area suffered substantial damage and blowdown during a windstorm several years ago. Full logging operations including felling, skidding and hauling are expected to commence later this fall or over the winter.

Recreationists seeking to visit Gamlin Lake are asked to pay extra attention to heavy equipment signage and avoid areas where equipment is working. Visitors to the area should also anticipate increased truck traffic traveling on the roadway accessing the site.

Vidovich Forestry Consulting purchased the Gamlin Lake Timber Sale in late September. The project is expected to generate 2.5 million board feet of timber.
