Nov. 12, 1969 — SOUTHSIDE BURNED

An empty shell was all that remained of the six-classroom Southside Elementary School by 9 a.m. Sunday after an arson-kindled blaze roared through the school in early morning darkness.

Prowlers apparently gained entry by breaking windows in the kitchen, which is attached to the multi-purpose room (gym). The gym was the only part of the school building that did not burn, though it was threatened for a time.

GRANDDAUGHTER FOR CROSSWHITES

Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Crosswhite received word of the birth of a granddaughter, Tania Crosswhite Ribeiro, on Oct. 21 in the Evangelical Hospital of Goiania, Goias, Brazil, weighing two quilos, 800 grams (or about six pounds). Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Silvio Q. Ribeiro (Millie Crosswhite).

GOLDEN WEDDING

Mr. and Mrs. Dan Hustead of Sandpoint observed their golden wedding anniversary Nov. 9 with a reception in the Eagles hall. Relatives came from The Dalles, Ore., Spokane, Richland and Republic, Wash., Coeur d’Alene, Priest River and the local area to celebrate. Granddaughters, Jeannie Dickmann and Tammy Stromquist circulated the guest book; niece Lenore Brock, presided at the coffee service; Ruby Rothenfluh and Mrs. Hustead’s sister, Mable Welo, served punch, while Lena Hathaway served the cake.

Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Hustead, who were married last Saturday in Sandpoint, left for their home in Westmond this morning.

LODGE OF ELKS IS NOW A FACT

With fitting ceremonies, the Sandpoint Lodge No. 1376 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks was instituted Thursday in one of the most successful functions of the kind ever staged in this area. 99 new members were taken into the order, besides nearly 70 who were already members but who joined the new lodge by demitting from other lodges, mostly from Coeur d’Alene. Herman Taylor was chosen exalted ruler.

R.C. MEMBERSHIPS TOTAL 1000

Latest reports indicate that Sandpoint, as well as the county, is coming across nobly this year in the Red Cross membership drive. It was estimated that city memberships would total 1000 before tonight, while returns are just beginning to come in from the county districts.

HAS TONSILS REMOVED

Miss Gretchen Lantz underwent an operation at the office of Dr. Stackhouse Friday for tonsillitis, after which she was taken to her home at Kootenai by her mother, who was with her during the removal of her tonsils.
