Elks honor top students
Sandpoint Elks Lodge No. 1376 has announced students of the month for October and November for the Lake Pend Oreille School District.
To be selected as an Elks student of the month, students must meet guidelines for character, citizenship, service, scholarship and leadership.
The Elks actively seek to reward youth through many different programs including scholarship awards, Hoop Shoot tournaments, dictionary donations to third graders, drug awareness programs and many other activities and programs.
Sandpoint Elks Lodge award thousands of dollars in scholarships and local students also received an additional money in state and national Elk scholarships. The Elks are the third lagest awarder of scholarships in the county and several students have received large scholarships from the state and national level of Elks.
Those honored were:
• Teigen Edmundson
The son of Jill and Mark Edmundson, Teigen Edmund-son is a student of the month for October. A student at Sand-point High School, he is ranked second in his class with a 4.38 grade point average.
Edmundson has played soccer for all of his high school years, and has been on the varsity team for two of them, one of which he was the captain.
In addition, he has participated in National Honor Society and math club for the past three years. He is the SHS president of National Honor Society.
He plans on going on to college to study computer science.
• Erika Bocksch
The daughter of Ken and Lori Bocksch, Erika Bocksch was named a student of the month for October. A student at Sand-point High School, she is ninth in her class with a 4.225 grade point average.
In her space time, she enjoys painting faces for Pend Oreille Arts Council events and The Co-Op. She also has volunteered judge projects for the Bonner County Pre-Fair and is a member of the Senior Mural Committee.
She is ranked ninth in her class of 250 students.
• Sophie McMahon
The daughter of Lyn Easterbrook and Daniel McMahon, Sophie McMahon was named an Elks Student of the Month for October at Clark Fork High School.
Due to being a year ahead in her high school classes, this semester McMahon is currently taking dual credit classes at the NIC Sandpoint satellite campus. She plans to take her second semester off and complete a NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) course in the Patagonia region of Chile. Through this program she will spend a month backpacking, practicing Spanish, working toward outdoor certifications, and earning college credits. McMahon has also participated in varsity and club volleyball, tennis, and yearbook throughout her highschool years.
McMahon is grateful to have had the opportunity to participate in CFHS’s Independent Learning track, where she discovered her passion for special education. She currently has a job doing respite care for a family with a special needs child, and hopes to pursue a career working with people with disabilities. Her long-term goal is to one day create programs and initiatives for children with disabilities in developing countries.
• Kobi Dooley
Kobi Dooley is the child Melissa and Benjamin Dooley and was born and raised in Clark Fork, Idaho. For the past six years, Kobi has been going to Clark Fork Jr./Sr. High School just as his father, mother, and brother have done before him. He has been named an Elks Student of the Month for October at Clark Fork High School.
Dooley was on the varsity track and field team for his freshmen and sophomore years, throwing discus, shot put, and also running the 100 meters. For junior and senior year, he switched to tennis, playing doubles. Dooley often spends his time volunteering at the local Clark Fork Library, being a place of study, and also an important part of his childhood.
Dooley has a 3.5 GPA; however, has been taking college-level dual credit classes since his sophomore year. He will have amassed a total of 29 college credits by the end of his first senior semester, which is equal to the amount that a sophomore in college would have. He plans to attend the University of Idaho to achieve a bachelor’s in political science and criminology. He has dreams of working in the FBI as a special agent, making his country a safer place.
• Paige Davidson
The daughter of Kirk and Kirsten Davidson, Paige Davidson has been selected as a November student of the month at SHS.
A four-year cross country athlete, she competed at state as an alternate freshman and sophomore year and then competed at state for her junior and senior year. She also is a four-year track athlete, competing in the hurdles and pole vault and qualifying for state as a sophomore and junior. In her senior year, she was named a team captain for cross country and track.
A NHS member, she has a 4.0 GPA (4.34 weighted) and a class rank of fourth out of 250.
• Conrad Becker
The son of Greg and Jenianne Becker, Conrad Becker was selected as a November student of the month at Sandpoint High School.
A SHS senior, Becker is ranked 14th out of 250 students and has a weighted GPA of 4.16. He is a member of the National Honor Society and has played on the school baseball team for all four years. He also ran cross country for two years and played the trumpet in the band for three.
In his free time, Becker enjoys mountain biking and snowboarding. He works at Schweitzer during the ski season, volunteers as a soccer coach for SSA and works for a local contractor full time during the summer.
