Sagle Elementary fifth graders recently toured the Spokane Waste to Energy Facility as part of a unit about human impact on the environment. This facility is part of the community’s solid waste system that encourages recycling and waste reduction along with the recovery of energy. The facility burns garbage to recover energy in the form of electricity. The students learned about options of landfills for trash disposal, the positives and negatives of burning waste to generate electricity, and the history of Spokane’s waste facility.
