Nov. 28, 1919 – I.W.W. TO FACE JURY

Preliminary examinations of the I.W.W.s left in the net after last week’s American Legion raids came up in probate court Wednesday and Judge Whitaker bound over the 22 defendants for trial.

There being room for only 14 men in the bunks of the jail, there are some 14 who have to sleep on the floor. The jail has not been so crowded in its history. Sheriff Spoor gave his many boarders chicken for their Thanksgiving dinner. The prisoners have given no trouble.

DIPHTHERIA AMONG WOBBLIES

When the I.W.W. raids were made last week, Roy Naples, colored, came down with diphtheria and was rushed to the pesthouse. He was well over the disease by Wednesday and was one of the Wobblies bound over to district court.

This morning Abe Thompson, one of the 22 men held, came down with the disease at the jail and it is feared that the rest have been exposed sufficiently that an epidemic may appear.

Thompson is not a U.S. citizen and Health Officer Wendle laments that it will cost the county $3.75 to give him a “shot” of antitoxine (sic).
