Sandpoint swim team hosted its only home meet of the season Saturday and the Bulldogs didn’t disappoint the roaring crowd that filled the Litehouse YMCA to cheer them on.

It was senior day and Mikayla Schoening, one of Sandpoint’s star swimmers, left her mark in her final home event taking first in the girls 100 and 200 freestyle.

“Mikayla Schoening in both her 200 free and 100 free was amazing,” Sandpoint swim head coach Greg Jackson said after the meet. “She beat some really strong 5A competitors in the process.”

As a combined boys and girls team at the meet, Sandpoint finished second behind Lake City who edged out the Bulldogs 262-255. On the boys side, the Bulldogs took first by three points over Lake City and the girls fell 10 points short of the Timberwolves and claimed second.

“I was really happy with their performance [Saturday],” Jackson said. “Everyone one of them performed well one way or another.”

Along with Sandpoint and Lake City, Bonners Ferry, Lewiston and Wallace also competed. Overall, the Bulldogs won five of the six relays and won seven of the 16 individual events.

Sophomore Jack Grzincic competed in four events in the meet and had his strongest individual performance in the boys 100 backstroke where he finished first with a time of 1:09.57.

“I had a huge amount of respect for what Jack Grzincic brought to the table,” Jackson said. “He really showed up in his 100 back.”

In the boys 200 free, the Norling brothers battled it out and finished first and second as Caleb edged out his older brother Hayden by just over one second.

“I thought the Norling boys came in and really swam well,” Jackson said. “They pushed each other in the 200 free.”

On the girls side, junior Kate Bokowy shined with a time of 2:42.48 to take first in the 200 individual medley. Junior Autumn Morgan claimed wins in the 100 fly and 100 breaststroke to round out the team’s individual victories at the meet.

Jackson said his team showed a lot of depth during the event.

“We had a lot of support,” he said. “A lot of good performances from up and comers like Maren Davidson, Jacob Slocum, Emily Ballard and the rest of the team really helped support.”

Moving forward, Jackson said he is looking for the boys to continue to work on their technique and the girls to keep getting better.

“The girls are familiar with hard work, they did it last year and they’re doing it again this year,” he said. “They’re starting to really hone in on some of their technique and we saw a lot of that [Saturday] and so as long as they continue down that path I think we have a lot of room for improvement.”

Last year, the Bulldogs’ girls and boys teams finished third and fourth respectively at state and Jackson said the Bulldogs on track to finish even higher this season.

“I think we’re ahead of where we were at state last year,” he said.

Sandpoint returns to the pool Saturday, Oct. 12, to compete against Lake City, Lewiston, Post Falls and Wallace at the University of Idaho.
