Grangeville crushes Priest River 56-0

| October 2, 2019 1:00 AM

GRANGEVILLE — Six turnovers and -2 yards of total offense.

That was the story of Priest River football’s 56-0 loss to Grangeville on Saturday.

“This was by far our worst effort of the year,” Priest River head coach Jared Hughes said in an email. “Notch it up to the freezing wet weather, a third of our team being absent from practice most of the week due to illness, the long road trip, lack of depth, youth, lack of toughness, homecoming week starting too early, etc. You add those all up and you get what happened at Grangeville.”

The Spartans (0-4) gave up 28 points in the first half and in the final two quarters of the game they only ran seven offensive plays. The defense gave up 271 yards to the Bulldogs (2-3) and missed 25 tackles.

Junior Coby Rogers led the team with 10 tackles and senior Caden Brennan added eight. Senior Ben Zapfe had his best game of the season with six tackles.

The Spartans will look to pick up their first win of the season 7 p.m. Friday against Orofino at Priest River High School.

“We’re going to flush this game and work to get better to take on Orofino on Friday,” Hughes said in an emai1. “We have great kids, we just have to become better football players this week.”
