Community offers a paradise of entertainment fun

SANDPOINT — It’s hard to believe that this two-page Arts & Entertainment calendar has been a mainstay of the Thursday paper for the past three-and-a-half years. Today’s lineup marks my final entry in a weekly ritual I have richly enjoyed. One of my favorite aspects of the calendar gig has been when folks tell me they use it to plan their weekend activities — what a compliment!

Just as my own artistic endeavors have pulled me away from my much beloved Sunday feature articles, they now tug at my sleeve to pry me off of the arts and entertainment beat. I feel entirely fortunate to have these new opportunities as a performer and I move on with a spirit of gratitude. My time will be spent loving on our kids, acting goofy with grandchildren and making music with my lovely Tamara in Bridges Home, my pal Dave Hussey in the Paranormal Daves and my delightfully eccentric friend Fiddlin’ Red Simpson in the Risky Gents.

Thanks, my friends, for sharing this ride together and kudos to the Daily Bee for investing this weekly news space in our vibrant arts scene.

Ours is a unique and marvelous situation — we live in paradise and are blessed with the joys of small town life, while, at the same time, benefiting from a cultural scene that rivals many, much larger locales. If there’s magic involved in that rare equation, it’s the magic brought to it by the people who live here — the countless denizens of the arts who keep it alive and well. Keep up the good work!

‘The Way of Consciousness’

The Gurdjieff Foundation of Idaho is bringing a one-hour documentary about Gurdjieff and his teaching with a discussion to follow the screening.

The Hackles & Bart Budwig Band concert

Venue: Utara After Hours, Utara Brewing Co., 214 Pine St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 8 p.m.

The Hackles is a guitar-banjo duo that performs with gorgeous vocal harmonies.Admission: $10 for those 21 and over.

Friday, Oct. 11

‘Sounds of the East’

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7 p.m.

Pandit Partho Sarothy has gained an international acclaim and is widely acknowledged as one of the top sarod players in the world. Pandit Abhijit Banerjee is considered among the front ranking tabla players from India and one of the most sought after creative artists in the realm of Indian classical music. Somnath Roy is a master of South Indian percussion.

Their performance will be one based in classical Indian styles blended with contemporary influences and improvisation. Presented by Sandpoint Curry & Freedom Firm.

‘The Secret of Cornbread Flats’

Venue: Sandpoint High School, 410 S. Divison Ave.

Join the Sandpoint High School Mime & Masque production of the dinner theater melodrama “The Secret of Cornbread Flats” Enjoy a delicious supper of chili and cornbread and cheer on Chuck Stake and Sheriff Honey as they figure out how to foil the dastardly plans of Con Carne, Sal Sa and Hal Apenio.

Friends of the Guitar Hour present Xuefei Yang

Venue: Jacklin Arts Center, 405 N. William St., in Post Falls.

If you enjoy Leon Atkinson’s weekly show, The Guitar Hour, on Spokane Public Radio-KPBX-FM, you’re in for a real treat with this ongoing classical guitar concert series. Xuefei Yang starts the series off, with additional concerts on Feb. 14 and May 8.

Harold’s IGA was a classic grocery store in Sandpoint; now it’s an indie rock band with an ever-changing cast of characters.

The market season wraps with a bountiful harvest and great sounds – make it down for this final day of fun.

Don’t miss this indie folk duo of Justin and Jen Landis. With roots in the singer-songwriter tradition, their sound is a shifting combination of instruments and arrangements. Their songs are melodically earnest, heartfelt, thoughtful and conflicted.

Fall Fling Cornhole Tourney

Venue: MickDuff’s Beer Hall, 220 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Rain or shine, all skill levels are welcome for this ACL regional points-earning tournament with both singles and doubles formats and three skill divisions for each format: social (novice), competitive (intermediate) and advanced. Competitive and Advanced is $20 player, $15 for ACL members. Social is $15 player, $10 for ACL members. Sign up for an ACL Membership in person at the event – it’s $25 and supports the SIC Club. Singles will start at 10:30 a.m. Doubles will start after singles (likely 2 p.m.). These tournaments will be double elimination. There will also be a Blind Draw $15 ($10 ACL Member) seeded blind draw at 4 p.m. for anyone showing up late or knocked out. Oktoberfest Pints for Veterans

MickDuff’s has teamed up with Sandpoint’s VFW to help drive awareness for veterans of all ages in our community. First pint for veterans will be purchased for them and MickDuff’s will be donating a portion of the bar proceeds to the VFW.
