Sandpoint shuts out Moscow for second time this season

SANDPOINT — Girls soccer continued to do what they do best — win.

The Bulldogs took down rival Moscow 2-0 Saturday at Pine Street Field in their final regular season match.

With the victory, Sandpoint locked up the No, 1 seed in 4A Region 1 district tournament. That means the Bulldogs will host the winner of Monday’s game between Lakeland and Moscow on Wednesday in the regional championship game.

“This is an expectation at this point,” Sandpoint head coach Conor Baranski said.

This was the second time this season the Bulldogs shut out the Bears. The first time was Sept. 17 in Moscow when Sandpoint won 7-0.

First half goals from sophomore forward Kiley Williams and junior forward Jordie Breeden helped the Bulldogs take control of the match Saturday and never looked back.

“I thought we looked good,” Baranski said. “Moscow has kind of unique tactics and I thought we did better today solving those problems they presented in the first half then we did down [in Moscow] even though we were winning by more at halftime down there.”

In the second half, Sandpoint’s attack slowed down and both teams only had a handful of scoring chances with most of the action happening at midfield.

“In the second half, I felt like we kind of started to drag and then I realized its probably because that’s our third game in five days, its probably just fatigue above anything else,” Baranski said. “But we did enough, they weren’t threatening ever.”

Now the Bulldogs will get a few days of rest before they host the regional championship 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Pine Street Field. With a victory, Sandpoint would advance to state for the seventh straight season.
