Priest River boys soccer suffers pair of early losses

The Priest River boys soccer team fell 9-2 against Grangeville in a non-league contest on Aug. 30.

“We had a number of opportunities that didn’t quite make it to the back of the net,” Priest River head coach Robert Lawler said in an email. “There was a lot of good movement of the ball showing the teamwork this team possesses. We are still working on getting all players healthy and eligible.”

Led by Aidon Acton’s hat-trick in the first 11 minutes, four different Grangeville players scored against the Spartans. The Bulldogs opened up the scoring and didn’t look back; they outshot Priest River 28-12.

Bowen Fegert’s pair of goals in the 12th and 39th minute led Priest River. Fegert currently leads the team in assists (two) and is tied with Cameron Bell at two goals apiece.

The Spartans (0-2-0, 0-1-0 IML) travel to Bonners Ferry on Sept. 3. Their next home game is against CDA Charter on Sept. 5 at 7 p.m.

Priest River kicked off the season on Aug. 27 with a 6-2 home loss to Timberlake in Intermountain League play.

“The Spartan boys soccer program is limited on numbers, yet determined,” Priest River head coach Robert Lawler said in an email. “They were fun to watch and no one can deny the sense of pride they bring to their school and community.”

Despite falling behind 5-0, the Spartans chipped away late with two goals in a five-minute span. Bowen Fegert found Cameron Bell on both of the Spartans’ goals that night.
