HAYDEN — Led by top-ten finishes from Annika Rantala (seventh, 21:55.9) and Sharnai Hogan (ninth, 22:35.6), the Priest River girls’ cross-country team placed third at the Coeur d’Alene Hayden Lake Invitational on Sept. 14.

Izzie Schmidt and Erika Swoboda finished third and fourth for the Spartans, respectively, while Lily Freitas ran a season-best 27:39.2 to round out the varsity scoring.

The Lady Spartans were a mere nine points off of second-place Bonners Ferry, whom Priest River will compete against for the 3A IML title at districts later this fall.

On the boys’ side, sophomore Kaden Fulton’s fourth-place finish, the Spartans’ boys cross-country team placed sixth out of seven scoring teams.

“Kaden Fulton [showed] his stuff,” Lance Clark wrote in an email. “He not only ran a time of 17:53, but he also got fourth in the varsity race. This was only 20 seconds off of second place.”

The Spartans will run at the Nike Battle of the 509 in Cheney, Washington this Saturday at 4:15 p.m.
