Lake City spoils Bulldogs' senior night with 7-1 win

SANDPOINT — From the first kick, Lake City was all over Sandpoint’s boys soccer team.
The Bulldogs didn’t muster a shot on goal until the 27th minute and were blown out 7-1 by the Timberwolves on Wednesday night.
Sandpoint honored its six seniors prior to the match, but Lake City midfielder Jacob Janzen didn’t allow them to enjoy the night once the match started.
“This is why I particularly do not enjoy senior night,” Sandpoint Head Coach Tanner French said. “It’s not that I don’t believe the seniors should be honored, it’s the fact that there is so much going on that clouds their mind and their focus.”
Janzen’s first shot of the night rang off the side of the right goal post in the 7th minute, but after that he was nearly unstoppable as he tallied 5 goals.
The Bulldogs played almost the entire first half in their own end. Lake City found the back of the net first in the 26th minute and added another score a few minutes before the half to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
The second half didn’t start any better for the Bulldogs as Lake City freshman Bryce Allred notched a goal in the 46th minute. However, Sandpoint continued to battle and finally broke through in the 54th minute when the Lake City goalie misplaced a cross into the box and senior midfielder Ryan Giese was their for the rebound.
Sandpoint’s momentum wouldn’t last long though as the Timberwolves added two more goals just minutes later.
As the game winded down, Lake City continued to pressure the Sandpoint defense and Janzen scored two more times to wrap up a disappointing senior night for the Bulldogs.
“They put up 7 goals,” French said. “That speaks for itself.”
Sandpoint (4-4-1) will look to bounce back against St. George’s 4:30 p.m. next Tuesday at Pine Street Field.
