Mother Nature tops week's entertainment options

SANDPOINT — Mother Nature tops the bill this week on the local entertainment scene, along with a focus on food, fun and fine music.

Stop by Farmin Park this evening to sip some tasty samplings at SoupTember: The Battle for the Golden Ladle, as twelve area competitors show off their best soups.

Friday has all sorts of action, including the Lake Pend Oreille Waterkeeper Water Summit at the Panida, with keynote speaker, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

Saturday marks the grand opening of the Pine Street Woods, with activities all day in this new outdoor haven, as well as the Global Climate Strike that same afternoon at Farmin Park.

Be sure to carve out some time on Saturday for Oktoberfest fun in Hope and, just maybe, the Pend Oreille Harvest Festival in Newport all weekend.

Thursday, Sept. 19

SoupTember: Battle for the Golden Ladle

Venue: Farmin Park, corner of Third and Oak, in Sandpoint.

Time: 5-8 p.m.

The community is invited to attend SoupTember: Battle for the Golden Ladle, where you sample soups from your favorite local restaurants and vote for your favorite! This year’s competitors include Dish, Beet and Basil, Chimney Rock, Eichardt’s, Jalapenos, Pack River Store, Pend d’Oreille Winery, Skeyes the Limit, Spuds, Tango Cafe, Trinity at City Beach and Winter Ridge. Also enjoy a raffle, auction and live music featuring Browne Salmon Truck. Funds raised support Sandpoint Community Resource Center.

Paul & Ieva Cataldo

Venue: 219 Lounge, 219 First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 8-11 p.m.

New England singer/songwriter Paul Cataldo brings his distinct brand of backwoods wilderness-inspired Americana to the stage. Cataldo developed his Appalachian mountain sound while living in Asheville, North Carolina. Paul and Ieva tour for a living from Florida to Alaska to Lithuania to Portugal.

‘Empowered’

Lake Pend Oreille Waterkeeper Water Summit

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6 p.m.

Lake Pend Oreille Waterkeeper 10th Anniversary Event will be filled with six speakers, including keynote speaker, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., discussing innovative technology and scientific breakthroughs that influence water quality on a microscopic level.

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., is an environmental attorney, author, activist, clean technology entrepreneur, and radio host. He is an Irish American, son of New York senator and former attorney general Robert F. Kennedy, and the nephew of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy. Kennedy serves as senior attorney and president of Waterkeeper Alliance, a nonprofit focused on grassroots efforts to preserve and protect waterways worldwide.

Echo Elyseum

Echo Elysium, a nuanced and dynamic electric and acoustic guitarist, has been transporting audiences to alternate dimensions for more than 10 years in the Pacific Northwest. His performances have been described as a magical and ethereal experience, influenced by a wide range of genres from Rhythm & Blues to Prince and Pink Floyd to Southern Gospel.

The B Radicals

Grounded in a solid framework of tasty, eclectic compositions, the B Rads creatively push their musicality in live settings. Using spontaneous improvisational pieces and metaphysically inspired lyrics, they create danceable beats and colorful music to inspire the creative joy we all bring into this life.

Monarch Mountain Band

Pamela Jean opens the evening with a powerful and magnetic voice that gracefully elicits the emotion that her songwriting and storytelling create.

Saturday, Sept. 21

Grand Opening of Pine Street Woods

Time: 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

Kaniksu Land Trust invites the community to join them for the grand opening of Pine Street Woods, with daylong activities that include guided hikes, mountain bike rides and hikes, a doctor-led walk, yoga, educational activities for kids, and more. All events will be held at Pine Street Woods, which will soon be accessible from West Pine Street via an access road approximately 1/4 mile past the end of the pavement.

Please be aware that for the safety of all, the access road is currently closed but there is a sign on the gate. If you would like to begin exploring trails, access is available from Greta’s Segway and Little John Trail.

Global Climate Strike

Venue: Farmin Park, corner of Third and Oak, in Sandpoint,

Time: 1 p.m.

Join with friends and family as the communities of Lake Pend Oreille come together as part of the Global Climate Strike. People in 150 countries are organizing for the global event. Some will speak out for local and global forests, others will call for clean energy and protection for all species, air and water as they spend the day in action raising awareness.

Oktoberfest

Venue: Hope Memorial Community Center, 415 Wellington Place, in Hope.

Time: 5 p.m.

Hope’s 7th annual Oktoberfest is always a blast and admission is free! Live music by Devon Wade, plus available for purchase is a homemade braut meal, beer on tap, plus wine and other beverages. Enter the raffle for a load of firewood, a weekend at The Seasons, and lots more! All proceeds benefit the Memorial Community Center programs including the Hope Preschool.

Pend Oreille Harvest Festival

Venue: Indian Creek Community Forest, 1802 Indian Creek Rd., in Newport.

Time: 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Just six miles north of Newport, Wash., the fourth annual Pend Oreille Harvest Festival is an easy-to-find, family-friendly, and free entertainment option for an early fall weekend. Peruse one-of-a-kind arts and crafts vendor booths, show locally grown produce, plus there will be stage performances, live music, demonstrations and more. Located at a former horse ranch, the forest now houses the Kalispel Tribe’s native tree nursery and several other developing projects to benefit the community.
