'Madame Butterfly' opens today in Spokane

| September 20, 2019 1:00 AM

Inland Northwest Opera is bringing “Madame Butterfly” to Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox for performances today and Sunday.

Tonight’s performance begins at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday’s matinee begins at 2 p.m.

Soprano Elizabeth Caballero will star as Cio-Cio-San and the role of Lieutenant Pinkerton will feature tenor Chad Shelton. Both appeared in the 2018/19 MET season. Mezzo-soprano Sandra Piques Eddy will appear as Suzuki, a regular with the MET.

“We have raised the bar both in opera talent and stage production. Our set incorporates paper with a nod to Japanese paper designs and we were fortunate to use furnishings from the local Japanese community. This opera will be our biggest endeavor yet.” said Dawn Wolski, INO general director.

Puccini’s “Madame Butterfly” tells the story of a young Japanese maiden whose pride and honor are wounded by an American naval officer, leading to heartbreak and tragedy. This production, directed by Fenlon Lamb, will feature an innovative set design constructed by Papermoon Opera Productions.

Conducting is Dean Williamson, who is entering his fourth season as music director of the Nashville Opera.

“Madame Butterfly” is sung in Italian with English supertitles. A 30 minute pre-concert talk will be held one hour prior to the performance. Tickets ranging from $23-$90 are on sale at Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox by calling 509-624-1200 or FoxTheaterSpokane.org.
