NELSON GIRL SPARED FROM DEATH

Sherlene, 3½ year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Barry D. Nelson, had a close brush with drowning at Rocky Point Wednesday. She has four heroes to thank for the fact that she is still alive: Laurie Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Smith, Dr. W.C. Hayden, and Pam and Laurie Newton, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Skip Newton.

The four girls were at Dr. Hayden’s dock when Sherlene fell into the river and sank to the bottom. The Newton girls came to her aid, as Laurie Smith ran for help at the Hayden home. Dr. Hayden plunged in fully clothed, pulling the child from the bottom. She regained consciousness without the aid of resuscitation, and apparently has had no other effects from the accident.

HEAVY WIND DOES DAMAGE

Much damage was done in Sandpoint today by excessively high winds which dropped out of gray skies in the forenoon and continued through the day. Many shade and fruit trees were broken, telephone wires were out of commission and in some cases, toll lines to outlying districts caused “trouble shooters” and linemen much work to keep communication open. There was also light rain and a marked drop in temperature. The storm broke a several weeks’ period of mild weather which had promised to extend into one of the finest Indian summers in the area’s history.
