100 Years Ago — 1920

Local work applauded

At a Red Cross meeting held Tuesday afternoon at the (Congregational) church, it was decided to store the Red cross supplies so as to have them handy in case of another emergency. A letter was read from Red Cross headquarters in Sandpoint commending the local auxiliary on the efficient work and the economical manner in which the relief was handled during the recent epidemic of sickness.

90 Years Ago — 1930

New doctor in town

Dr. E. L. Spohn reports that he is about to leave Priest River to practice medicine in Coeur d’ Alene. Dr. Harold Soucey, or Portland, will take over Dr. Spohn’s practice here.

Tourist park coming

F. S. Williamson, owner of the Pawnee Farm at the Outlet of Priest Lake, has purchased the beautiful point of land across the river from Pawnee Farm, and is converting it into a tourist park, installing tables, stoves and other equipment for the convenience of the public.

80 Years Ago — 1940

Pushing the mail car

J. W. Thomas of Coolin stopped overnight in Priest River on his return from Spokane, where he had gone on business. Mr. Thomas states that in coming from Coolin a few days ago it was necessary to walk part of the way and shove Caprai’s mail car the balance. He hoped to find better going on his return.

70 Years Ago — 1950

Buses running again

The Spokane-Priest Lake Motor Coach Lines resumed service between Spokane and Newport, Wash. Monday, Art Stewart, manager announced. Emergency load restriction placed by the state highway department closed the Newport highway to bus traffic March 1.

60 Years Ago — 1960

Window broken in fight

Two young men, Monty Cain, Newport, and Dennis Coplin, Elk, ended up in the hospital as the result of a fight at the Paul Bunyan Lanes bowling alley Friday night. Deputy Sheriff Mike Rose said the fight started inside the building and ended outside when, in the struggle, both men fell through the plate glass window at the bowling alley’s entrance.

50 Years Ago — 1970

Fuhrer named PLTPA leader

Jack Fuhrer of Priest River was named president of the Priest River Timber Protective Association at a special meeting of the directors, replacing Art Hall, of Coeur d’ Alene, who resigned.

40 Years Ago--1980

Chamber building burns down

The chamber of commerce storage building on the Loggers Day celebration grounds burned to the ground early Thursday morning, destroying the Priest River float stored inside. Cause of the fire, reported about 1 a.m., was not known.

30 Years Ago — 1990

Makes All-North Idaho Team

Those who witnessed Spartan basketball last season saw a real crowd-pleaser take the court. By the time the Sparts traveled to the IML tourney, junior Cameron York had a stack of awards. Well, add another honor to the stand-out’s collection. York has been named one of the first five in the Spokesman-Review/ Spokane Chronicle All North Idaho basketball team.

20 Years Ago — 2000

PRLHS soprano chosen

A high school choir member will be competing in the State Solo Contest May 6 in Boise. Stephanie Street, a senior, earned the honor at the Solo & Ensemble competition in Moscow, performing for a judge who was evidently very impressed.
