Aug. 23, 1970 — NEW SMOKEY BEAR SIGN

Smokey the bear lost his fire danger warning pointer. The old fire danger sign, with Smokey pointing to the current fire danger, has been replaced with a sign on which the bear displays a sign instead. Forest Service crews prepared the new sign, as youngsters often re-adjusted the pointer on the old sign, so the public wasn’t always properly informed of the true fire danger.

The new automobile service station, recently built on Cedar street opposite the Idaho hotel (corner 4th and Cedar) was opened for business this week under the management of J. Monroe Wallace, the company operating service stations now both here and at Kalispell.
