SANDPOINT — Here we go.

After a quiet Thanksgiving break, local basketball teams are eager to take the court tonight and get their seasons underway.

The Sandpoint boys open their 2020-21 campaign with a 7 p.m. game at Timberlake. The Bulldogs are coming off a 10-12 season which saw them go winless in Inland Empire League play for a fourth straight season.

Sandpoint lost all-league selections Kobe Banks and Ryan Roos and four other seniors, but a mountain of injuries last year allowed a group of talented freshmen to see plenty of playing time. That group is now a year older and year more experienced, and head coach Wade Engelson is excited about their potential this season.

Timberlake opened its season on Saturday at home against Lakeland and the Hawks ran away with a 81-23 win.

The Clark Fork boys and girls basketball teams open their seasons tonight at Genesis Prep. The girls take the court first at 5:30 p.m. followed by the boys at 7 p.m.

The girls went 10-11 last season and fell to Lakeside in the district championship game. The Knights are no longer in the North Star League and the Lady Cats are feeling pretty good about their chances of getting back to state for the first time since 2012, despite losing league MVP Ellie Kiebert and Sara Hathaway.

The Clark Fork boys have been rebuilding their program over the last few years under head coach Heath Beason and the team is ready to take the next step. The team will be led by half brothers Carter Sanroman and Cameron Garcia.

The Sandpoint girls already have a pair of games under their belt and they take the court 7 p.m. tonight at home against Timberlake looking to secure their first victory of the season.

Two weeks ago, the Bulldogs fell 40-25 at Timberlake (3-1).

Sandpoint wrestling opens its season 6 p.m. Friday with a dual against Priest River at Les Rogers Court.

The Bulldogs sent nine wrestlers to state last year and head coach Jake Stark is confident his team can send even more this winter and contend with Lakeland for the district crown. The Hawks have won 12 straight district titles.

No fans will be in attendance at any of these games due to COVID-19 restrictions. Sandpoint will livestream all its home events this winter on its Facebook page and Clark Fork is planning on doing the same.
