Wagon brings Santa Claus to Priest River

100 Years Ago — 1920

Cone collection finished

The plans for the extraction of pine seed from the cones maintained by the Forest Service of the Falls Ranger Station has been in operation for a few weeks. The collection of cones has been completed, more than 2000 sacks of cones, or between 2500 to 3000 bushels, have been secured.

90 Years Ago — 1930

Thinks it’s a tomahawk

M. S. Lindsay brought into the Times office Wednesday a rock which he believes to be the head of an Indian tomahawk. The stone was found across the river where they were doing some roadwork.

80 Years Ago — 1940

Mr. And Mrs. Buchanan of the Royal Buck Dude Ranch were in town in route to the Atlantic Coast for a vacation. They expect to stop in Flint, Mich. to pick up a new car and will then continue to New York. They will return through the southland.

70 Years Ago — 1950

New cleaner opens

The Modern Cleaners in the building across from the Hotel Lorraine (Charbonneau) will open Dec. 18. Stephan Sinchak, the owner, has had 23 years’ experience in cleaning and pressing and has the most modern equipment,

60 Years Ago — 1960

Science program coming

Warren Bartanen brings a unique science program to Priest River for which he has been trained for his work by the University of Oregon. He is one of a corps of teachers currently visiting in high schools all over the northwest. Bartanen comes to the community in a specially-equipped station wagon which contains all of his demonstration apparatus.

50 Years Ago — 1970

Trustees for the Louise and Bob Doolittle Scholarship Fund were selected at a meeting of the fund organizers. Named to the board of trustees were George Connolly, Glenn Snider, and John Martin, all of Priest River, and Evelyn Tromley, Boise. The fund was established by friends of the Doolittles to honor their contributions to the Priest River community and the state.

40 Years Ago — 1980

Santa comes in wagon

Santa Claus will be coming to town Saturday, Dec. 13, but instead of his usual appearance at City Hall he will be riding in a horse-drawn wagon. There will be two teams giving rides to the children. Stanley Saccomanno will drive a team of his Belgians, while Kari Lee Saccomanno will drive one owned by her father, Anson Saccomanno. Santa is slated to ride in one wagon.

30 Years Ago — 1990

Christmas party a success

Success. That’s how Priest River Chamber of Commerce members referred to the Centennial Christmas Celebration held Friday on Main Street. Hundreds of children, parents and friends turned out to see Santa, enjoy hot chocolate, cookies and chili, and be part of what is quickly becoming a landmark event in Priest River.

20 Years Ago — 2000

Bike and wagon winners

Zeth Harrison won a bike donated by First Security Bank from a drawing at Christmas on Main Street. Tiffany Palmer also won a bike, from Panhandle State Bank, and Justin Hopfinger a wagon donated by Bonner Saw and Power Equipment. Christmas on Main Street is sponsored by the Priest River Chamber of Commerce.
