Dec. 10, 1970 – SANTA ARRIVES

Santa made his first official visit to Sandpoint last Saturday, greeted at the Community Hall Christmas tree by eager fans, young and old, despite heavily-falling snow. The snow must have been coming too thick and fast for even Rudolph, as Santa arrived in a snowmobile. Ringing sleigh bells and assisting with candy canes were SHS Ponderettes Cindy Roos, Ann Eitzman, Jan Spring, Eileen Klatt, Sara Hedlund, Debbie Haugse and Paralee Scribner.

CITY HAS TWO YULE TREES

Two Christmas trees adorn First Avenue this year. The traditional Community hall live tree has been strung with colored lights by city firemen. The cut evergreen at of First and Cedar was hauled in by Pack River Lumber Co., while Pacific Power Co. provided men and equipment to erect it. The tree at First and Cedar is lit by a colored spotlight and decorated with homemade ornaments brought by local youngsters.

The club’s disapproval of “moonlight” dancing and skating had been expressed weeks ago but no concerted action toward abatement was undertaken at that time. The club women had since approached the management of the Liberty theater, seemingly the principal offender, but secured no promise of cooperation to reform the things the club desires corrected, cheek-to-cheek dancing, and dancing and skating position, as well as the abatement of the moonlight feature.

CITY BREVITIES

The current Saturday Evening Post contains a picture of the Pend d’Oreille river at Albany Falls, in connection with a write-up of the proposed Columbia basin irrigation project. It is to be noted that the magazine spelled “Pend d’Oreille” right.
