COEUR d’ALENE — Sandpoint girls basketball stayed within striking distance in the first half, but Lake City shut down the Bulldogs in the final 16 minutes to sail to a 67-34 Inland Empire League victory on Friday.

The Bulldogs were down just 7 points in the closing seconds of the first half, but the Timberwolves hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to take a 10-point lead at the half. Lake City carried that momentum with them in the second half, scoring 37 points.

Michigan State commit Brooklyn Rewers went off for the Timberwolves, scoring 23 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.

Head coach Will Love said Lake City did a good job attacking their zone and he thought his team got a little tired in the second half.

"They got it to that double-digit lead and we weren't able to cut into it," he said. "They shot the ball extremely well, especially in the second half, and Rewers kind of had her coming out party for this year. She had a big game."

The teams went back and forth in the opening 16 minutes, but the Timberwolves turned it on in the second half.

Love knew what Lake City was capable of.

"I watched a couple of their games," he said, "and you could tell Lake City was just off a little bit because they do have some talented shooters on that team and tonight they were able to hit those shots."

The Bulldogs are still figuring out the rotation with sophomore Kelsey Cessna sidelined for the rest of the season.

"The good news is we were able to compete with Lake City for basically a half," Love said, "and the kids did some excellent things, so we just have to keep building on that ... We just got to keep doing the things that lead to success for us."

Hattie Larson and Kaylee Banks led the team with 10 points apiece and Bella Phillips added 7.

Love said Phillips held her own against Rewers.

"I thought Bella Phillips had her best game of the season," Love said. "She hit some outside shots for us, which is ultimately going to be huge for our offense, and she just did a tremendous job rebounding."
