Girl killed riding tube

An 11-year-old Oldtown girl was killed early Sunday night when the towed inner tube she was riding on was struck by an oncoming pickup. Idaho State Police said Mariah Noelle Mathia was killed instantly when the tube, pulled behind a car her brother was driving, whipped into the path of the pickup. She struck the bumper and slid under the truck, authorities said.

Hoops tourney set to start

The 1990 Christmas Classic basketball tournament begins Friday in Spartan Gym. Clark Fork will be new to the tourney this year. The Wampus Cats will join Priest River, Newport and Cusick to square off in the invitational meet.

Board nixes proposal

An attempt by Dwain Valez, District 2 Bonner County school board member, to require students to have passing grades in all subjects before they could participate in extracurricular activities did not get a passing grade by the Bonner County School Board.

A first for Priest Lake

The first sewer district in the Priest Lake area was created Tuesday as voters in the proposed Coolin Sewer District approved official establishment of the unit to provide sewer facilities to keep pollution out of the lake.

60 Years Ago — 1960

Cook house vanishes

A cook house on Priest Lake, belonging to Joslyn Manufacturing, has disappeared and efforts to locate it have failed thus far. The 20x40-foot structure with metal roof on float and skids had been pulled up on the Diamond Corporation camp property at Two Mouth. The float and skids were still there. Priest Lake is experiencing an accelerated wave of theft, according to reports.

70 Years Ago — 1950

Man injured at camp

Roy Dahlberg, employee of Diamond Match, sustained a broken leg and other injuries last Tuesday when he was struck by a “sweep” while skidding logs at Priest Lake. He was brought by boat to Headquarters camp on Cavanaugh Bay, where Dr. L. J. Stauffer and the Moon ambulance met him and removed him to a Spokane hospital.

80 Years Ago — 1940

Now a broadcaster

Dow Leroy Smith, former Priest River boy, is broadcasting pipe organ selections each Thursday night from 11 o’clock to 12 o’clock from a station at Walla Walla, Wash.

90 Years Ago — 1930

New equipment installed

An engineer from the Western Sound Electric Company is installing a new sound-on-film apparatus at the Rex Theater. The new equipment is an additional unit of the machinery placed in the theater a few months ago and will probably be in operation some time next week.

100 Years Ago — 1920

Hospital reopens to patients

All sick or injured persons holding Priest River Hospital tickets will again please report at the hospital, as the quarantine has been lifted and the hospital is open to receive patients.
