BONNERS FERRY — Sandpoint boys basketball picked up its second victory of the season on Saturday night, taking down Bonners Ferry 73-66.

It was a back-and-forth affair and the Bulldogs trailed by 2 points at the half. However, Sandpoint outscored the Badgers 40-31 in the final 16 minutes.

"I'm proud of our guys in that we got knocked down a couple times ... and our guys just continued to compete," head coach Wade Engelson said.

This was only the Bulldogs fourth game this season and the team hadn't taken the court since losing at Lake City on Dec. 11.

"Bonners Ferry is always tough at home," Engelson said. "They are well coached, they got tough players and they compete every possession and they came out and took it to us there for a while, and it took us a while to regroup, so we're very fortunate to walk away with a win."

Senior captain Darren Bailey didn't play for the Bulldogs, but all nine players that took the court for Sandpoint scored.

"All nine guys made contributions on the defensive end," Engelson, "and I just think all my guys are getting better, and that's part of the process for us to be a good team."

Colin Roos recorded a double-double, tallying 15 points and 12 rebounds.

"He brought great energy," Engelson said about Roos. "If you watch him play, he's an extremely active rebounder and he's always active on the court and really made a difference for our team tonight."

Arie VanDenBerg knocked down four 3-pointers and scored 14 points. Freshman Max Frank had 9 points, but his biggest contribution came on the defensive end, Engelson said.

Rusty Lee tallied 9 and Elijah Larson and Ethan Butler each had 7.

Sandpoint (2-2) hosts St. Maries at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 2.
