Lady Cats take on Genesis Prep at district tourney tonight

COEUR d’ALENE — Clark Fork girls basketball begins its journey back to state 7:30 p.m. tonight when they battle No. 3 Genesis Prep in the 1A Division II District 1 tournament at North Idaho College.

The No. 2 seed Lady Cats (9-10) wrapped up their regular season Saturday with a 35-18 win at Kootenai and now face a Jaguars team they and the rest of the teams in the North Star League opted out of facing in the regular season this year.

Genesis Prep has yet to pickup up a win through 17 games this season and is coming off a crushing 53-21 defeat at Priest River on Friday.

With a victory over the Jaguars, Clark Fork would advance to the district championship game to face the winner of the first semifinal game Tuesday between No. 1 Lakeside and No. 4 Mullan.

But there’s a caveat. The tournament is single elimination for all of the teams except Lakeside, who has to be beaten twice in order to be prevented from advancing to state.

In all likelihood, the Lady Cats will have to face Lakeside in the championship game. If that’s the case, the first game will be contested 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Clark Fork will have to win that game to force a winner to state game 6 p.m. Friday.

The Lady Cats were swept by the Knights in the regular season, but nearly took down Lakeside in Clark Fork on Jan. 22. Unfortunately, a 2-point fourth quarter for the Lady Cats prevented them from knocking off the Knights as they fell 46-40.
