Vaught to read from new book

Wildland firerighter and author Charles Vaught, will be reading from his book “State of Fire,” a raw, honest, poignant, and oftentimes humorous book about his experiences.

“State of Fire” gives an insider’s look as to what it takes and means to be a wildland firefighter — from the toll it takes on you physically, mentally, and emotionally, to the toll it takes on one’s love life as well as the extreme camaraderie earned through hundreds of hours spent in a dynamic and dangerous environment, the job’s transformational qualities, and all the crazy behind-the-scenes shenanigans that happen along the way.

Vaught is donating 10% of all book sales to the Wildland Firefighter Foundation, an Boise-based nonprofit organization which helps the families of wildland firefighters who have either been injured or perished in the line of duty.

Vaught said he prefers to call the event “a passionate re-enactment” of his written word, which will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 6 p.m. at Laughing Dog Brewing, 805 Schweitzer Plaza Drive in Ponderay.

“You might be thinking, ‘How boring,’ ” Vaught said. “Believe me when I say that I bring the heat (both literally and pun totally intended) when I read, and I keep my audiences on the edge of their seats with my prose, my vivid imagery, my unexpected content, and my command of presence. I promise that this ain’t your grandma’s book reading. I make it entertaining and engaging for my audience.”
