Feb. 20, 1970 – SCHWEITZER AVALANCHE

An avalanche at Schweitzer Basin Monday in the area known as the “face” swept two members of the ski patrol down the slope in a near fatal accident that left both men badly bruised and battered. Glenn A. Phillips, Schweitzer hill manager, and John Pucci, ski patrolman, were treated at Bonner General Hospital and released.

PROUDLY WE SALUTE

Army Private Steven D. Miller, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. David R. Miller, Kootenai, is a combat engineer with the 2nd Infantry Division in Korea.

Steven R. Whalen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell A. Whalen, Sagle, is promoted to sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. A munitions maintenance specialist, Whalen is at Da Nang AB, Vietnam.

Roger Vernon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ora Vernon, Sandpoint, was promoted to a rank of sergeant while assigned to a Special Forces group in Vietnam. He will be home on furlough in April and then reassigned to Heidelberg, Germany.

Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Jeffers received news of the birth of a granddaughter on Feb. 28. The parents are Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey Jeffers of Pasco, Wash.

Feb. 20, 1920 – CITY BREVITIES

One hundred and fifty lockers, recently ordered for the high school gym, formerly in use in the Y.M.C.A. at Spokane, arrived yesterday and will be installed right away. The gymnasium has been recently refitted and the boys’ and girls’ dressing rooms enlarged.

William Burroughs, age 27 years, died at the City hospital Tuesday night, from complications following an attack of the influenza.

ANNUAL FARM BUREAU MEET

The Bonner county farm bureau executive committee met Wednesday at the farm bureau office. Matthew Schmitt, Culver, was unanimously elected president for 1920, H.F. Schedler elected vice president and Clarence Albee re-elected secretary-treasurer. R.G. Prichard, J.B. List, and E.G. Coleman will be the finance committee.

CIVIC CLUB DISCUSSES H.C.L.

Several local merchants were invited to discuss the high cost of living with the Civic club Monday, but E.H. Aaron seemed the only one courageous enough to turn out. Mr. Aaron stated that his margin of profit under war prices was no higher than before the war and that merchants many times received the blame when the merchant was paying exorbitant prices for the goods he sold.
