Plant the future by joining Seed Library

| February 21, 2020 1:00 AM

It seems like Idaho does this to us every year. Sometime in February, we get a streak of nice weather and it messes with our minds. We start thinking winter is waning and then, BAM! Suddenly, our dreams of spring and 60-degree weather are shattered like shards of ice in a frozen puddle. Even though there have been years when winter ended in February, I’ve learned not to take the bait.

Thinking of spring isn’t an entirely bad idea, though.

The seed libraries at the Sandpoint and Clark Fork branch libraries are in need of donations now, before the planting season starts.

Unlike the other collections at our public libraries, the seed libraries are not stocked by librarians. Our community seed libraries are stocked by the community members they serve.

The Seed Library is more than a nifty seed swap. It is a way of preserving open-pollinated seeds, protecting the highest quality varieties from loss or change due to outside influence. To that end, our seed libraries contain only locally grown and harvested, open-pollinated seeds.

If you are interested in learning more about seed saving, donating seeds, or borrowing seeds, pick up a hand-out located at the Seed Library catalog or ask one of our friendly library staff to help you locate some great books on the subject!

The following classes and events take place at the Sandpoint Library, 1407 Cedar Street, unless otherwise noted.
