Sandpoint Monarchs capture 6 golds at Winter Games

The Sandpoint Monarchs had a handful of athletes compete in Idaho’s Special Olympics Winter Games on Saturday, Feb. 8 at Silver Mountain in Kellogg and Shoshone Park in Mullan and the team brought home plenty of hardware.

Campbell Wyman earned two gold medals by acing the intermediate slalom and giant slalom in alpine skiing.

In Mullan, Ashley Lengyel claimed gold in all three of her events; the 50 and 100 meter women’s snowshoe races and the 4x100 unified relay race.

Bradey Scrimsher secured a silver medal in the 25 meter snowshoe race and a bronze in the 50 meter. John Painter got a silver in the 50 meter and a bronze in the 100 meter.

Thomas Dorenkamp captured gold in the 50 and the 4x100 unified relay and silver in the 100 meter in his division.

Chris Painter and Mandi Bates also earned gold in the 4x100 unified relay.

The Monarchs have unified track relays, snowshoe relays, bocce and softball if anyone is interested in being part of Sandpoint’s unified teams. Contact Chris Painter at 208-512-4768 for more information.

The Monarchs will now turn their attention to the annual Penguin Plunge, silent auction and chili cook-off on Saturday, March 21.
