Rotary donates to Hill school

The Newport/Priest River Rotary Club donated $750 to Idaho Hill Elementary for the after school program.

20 Years Ago — 1999

Two will perform

Two 8th graders from Priest River Junior High School have been accepted by the American Choral Directors Association Northwest Conference to sing with its honorary Children’s Choir for grades 5-9. Krissy Noble and Abigail Thomas will perform with the choir March 8-11 in Seattle, under the direction of Dr. Anton Armstrong from St. Olaf’s College in Minnesota. Ashley Sturgill, also nominated, declined the honor if favor of a school excursion to Washington, D.C.

30 Years Ago — 1989

Trophies remain in P.R.

The Christmas Classic championship trophies will not leave Priest River this year. It wasn’t easy but both Spartan squads held onto their crowns for at least another year after the Spartan boys turned back the Cusick Panthers 86-69, and the Priest River girls edged the Newport Grizzlies 47-35.

Public Defender resigns

Bonner County Public Defender Nick Lamanna resigned his $34,000 per year contract. His contract covered his assistants and all other office expenses, according to County Clerk Doris Kenney. He had been county public defender for six years. He cited staff changes at his legal firm, Cooke and Lamanna, and a heavy civil case load as his reason for resigning.

Chamber officers elected

A tally of the ballots mailed in by Chamber of Commerce members revealed that the new officers elected for 1970 were John Scott, president; Arlyn Duncan, vice president; and John Martin, Kenneth Naccarato, Larry Sherman and Ivan Rock, directors for three-year terms.

60 Years Ago — 1959

Albeni party well attended

162 children attended the free Christmas party sponsored by Mark Richeson Tuesday evening at the Albeni Falls Club. The children were treated to candy and punch, and many other gifts were given to the winners of the games and singing events.

70 Years Ago — 1949

They answered the plea

Answering the plea of college officials to relieve the loneliness of foreign students at Christmas time, Mr. and Mrs. G.N. Badraun had as their guest Ilhan Urgay, Turkish student at WSU. Although the bad weather forced the young man to leave on Christmas morning, he was able to enjoy the Badrauns’ hospitality for several days beforehand.

First stoplight for Oldtown

Dec. 21 marked the day of the first stoplight installed in Newport, Idaho. It is located on 4th Street, which leads into town from Blanchard and Spirit Lake highway, on top of the Idaho hill.

Annual turkey shoot draws locals

James Runck and Tony Jachetta returned from Newport Sunday with a well-filled larder, after taking in the annual turkey shoot of the Newport Gun Club.

Weather and hay prices extreme

J. J. Scribner was in town on business and stated that during the cold weather of last week the thermometer at his ranch registered 18 degrees below. He also said it is impossible for a rancher to make money with scrub cattle with hay at its present price, and that he intends to replace his herd with full-blooded Holsteins as quickly as possible for him to do so.
