Jan. 16, 1970 — JAYCEES CHALLENGE LIONS

We, the Sandpoint Jaycees, the community’s young active energetic men, challenge the old, heavy-set bald and grumpy members of the Lions Club to a baseball game on skis, to be held at Memorial Field January 20 at 7:30 p.m.

We know we will definitely have an advantage and will likely have to give concessions for these old men to take up this challenge. We will probably have to have MILK for them on one of the bases in order for them to make it completely around the bases and will likely need stretchers and oxygen, as the Lions are old and debilitated.

We sincerely hope the Lions will accept this challenge and help make Winter Carnival Week a success. Chet Howell, Pres. Sandpoint Jaycees.

County Health Officer Wendle reported that a little girl in the Washington school building came down yesterday with smallpox. Her sister was home with the disease, the parents ascribing her symptoms to eczema, and not calling a physician.

Today the Washington school children are being vaccinated and two rooms exposed were fumigated. With 16 cases of smallpox reported in the county this week, Dr. Wendle advises general vaccination and states that under modern methods of vaccination there is no danger of infection and sore arms.

SCHOOL SITES, PLANS TO BE DISCUSSED

The school board will hold a meeting Monday to discuss ways and means regarding the proposed new school building. The matter of building a new school building was discussed at last Monday’s meeting. A suggestion has been made that a new high school building be constructed and that it contain an assembly hall, gymnasium and club room for the American Legion and thus act as a memorial building to the soldiers and sailors, the subscriptions made to the memorial purpose being turned over toward paying the cost of the new building.
