Jan. 19, 1970 — SANTA IN JEANS

Santa Claus, portrayed by Mrs. Imogene Davis in a red nightshirt, blue jeans, and green stocking cap, was the highlight of the SHS Business Club Christmas party at the Davis home at Sunnyside. As the meal was being prepared, Carol Phillips played the piano and other club members sang Christmas carols. Each girl had to sit on Santa’s lap to receive her gift.

PUBLIC INVITED TO ‘POURING PARTY’

Bonner County Sheriff Robert Wilcox invites the public to a “pouring party” behind the courthouse at 10 a.m. tomorrow, featuring the destruction of beer and liquor seized as evidence in cases against minors the past three years. Probate Judge Frances Sleep ordered the beer and liquor destroyed, as it is no longer needed as evidence.

ANTLER CONTEST WINNERS NAMED

Winners of the Bonner County Sportsmen’s Assn. annual antler contest were: Bill Fournier (typical mule deer), Roger Lobdell (elk), Archie Gollen (non-typical mule deer), Kyle Bates (typical whitetail deer), and Herb Offermann, (non-typical whitetail).

BIG CEDAR POST

The Cedar Post, SHS student newspaper, put out a six-page issue last week, the biggest this school year, said Cedar Post editor Sue Hamilton.

Jan. 19, 1920 — CITY BREVITIES

A union victory meeting, celebrating the going into effect of the eighteenth amendment to the federal constitution (“Prohibition”) will be held at the Presbyterian church tonight at 7:30. The Sunday School orchestra will play, and there will be special music, both vocal and instrumental.

PAINTER HOTEL DESTROYED BY FIRE

Kootenai’s Painter hotel was totally destroyed between 5 and 6 o’clock this morning. The fire started shortly after 4 a.m. on the second floor and gained tremendous headway before it was discovered. No one seems to know how it started. A man occupying a first floor room discovered the fire, and he only became aware of it when burning embers from the ceiling began to fall upon him.

The Painter hotel was a three story 50-room frame structure built in 1908 by Joseph Painter. Two years ago, it passed to the ownership of the Humbird Lumber company. The hotel was a landmark of the days of the Kootenai boom.

NEWS FROM BUNGALOW

Our roads have been materially benefited by the January thaw. Considerable of the rough that was caused by the badly cut up surface during the muddy season and froze in that state, has been worked down by the many teams, making travel much more satisfactory.
