SPOKANE, Wash. — The Sandpoint golf team had its spring season ripped away due to the coronavirus pandemic, but that hasn’t stopped the golfers on the squad from doing whatever they can to improve over the summer.

Six Bulldogs and head coach Michael Deprez competed in the Inland Empire PGA Pro-Junior on Monday at the Esmeralda Golf Course.

The girls team came into the season with state title aspirations after finishing third at state last year, and that potential was on full display.

Camille Neuder (84), Annaby Kanning (90) and Karsen Granier (93) all shot personal bests.

“What happen with Camille, Karsen and Annaby is they finally had one of those days where they kind of figured it out from 50 yards and in,” Deprez said, “and we’ve been doing a massive amount of work on short game with the girls.”

Neuder shot under 90 for the first time in her career after coming “frustratingly close” several times.

“I think they’ve all been waiting for Camille to have that day and she finally did,” Deprez said.

Deprez, Kanning and Granier played together while representing the Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course. The trio took second as a team with an overall score of 129 (-15). They finished one stroke behind the first place team from the University of Idaho Golf Course.

Neuder teamed up with CeCe Deprez and David Currie, a PGA pro at The Idaho Club. The group tied for 13th out of 24 teams with a 139 (-5).

Incoming seniors Harley Wilks and Hattie Larson played alongside Timothy Morton, the head golf pro at the Highlands Golf Course. The team recorded a 140 (-4) to tie for 15th.

CeCe and Larson each shot an 86 and Wilks tallied a 90. Wilks shot a 39 on the front nine but he struggled on the second to last hole of the day, otherwise, he would have notched a round in the low 80’s.

Deprez was impressed with what he saw from Wilks.

“To me, he’s a different player this year than last,” Deprez said. “The 39 is really his wagon wheel now. He’s going to shoot anywhere from 38 to 42 for nine holes and he used to be a 44 to 50 guy. He’s made a dramatic improvement.”

CeCe and Larson are the girls top two players and the recent play of Neuder, Kanning and Granier has Deprez excited about competing at state next year.

“Now I know that we are in a position where it’s not probable, but it’s possible to win state,” Deprez said.

The team has been meeting every Wednesday afternoon at The Idaho Club to practice and Deprez has been working on short game with the girls on Mondays at 7:30 a.m.

Larson and CeCe will take part in an Idaho Junior Tour championship series event at the Highlands on Monday and Sandpoint is hoping to have a head-to-head match with Coeur d’Alene next Wednesday.
