Lawyer dies in Post Falls

A longtime former Priest River lawyer died Monday night during a softball game at the Quad Parks in Post Falls. Authorities said Greg Jones was pronounced dead at Kootenai Memorial in Coeur d’ Alene, after suffering an apparent heart attack. He was 51. Jones, who served as a Bonner County public defender, as well as maintaining a private practice, closed his Priest River office several years ago.

30 Years Ago — 1990

Plane damaged in airport mishap

A six-passenger, twin-engine plane crashed short of the Priest River Airport’s runway Saturday afternoon. No one was injured. The 1984 Cessna 340, owned by Felts Field of Spokane, was flying from Spokane to Priest River to pick up two passengers headed for Seattle when the plane landed about 15 feet short of the runway in the grass, smashing the plane’s nose and front landing gear. The plane slid down the runway on its belly, rupturing two fuel tanks before coming to a stop in front of the airport’ hanger and office. The damage to the plane’s wings, engines, nose and landing gear is estimated at more the $130,000.

Fee garbage petition initiated

A petition drive is underway to gather signatures for a solid waste initiative to be placed on the Bonner County ballot in the fall. The petition seeks to prohibit Bonner County from collecting a special fee for garbage collection services from county residents.

Soldier with local ties killed

Lt. Col. John J. Clark, 37, a former Spokane resident, was killed June 2 in Vietnam. Funeral services and burial were Monday in Arlington National Cemetery.

60 Years Ago — 1960

Scouts, Cubs plant trees

Scouts from Troop 100 in Priest River and Troops 101 and 11 from Sandpoint assisted in planting 1,000 Douglas fir and Ponderosa pine seedlings north of Priest River recently. The planting is a project of District 3 of the Idaho Federation of Women’s Clubs. To date, 6,700 trees have been planted on an area in Section 36 set aside by the State Land Commission. Plantings were made in 1954-56 and 1960.

Business news

Priest River’s Bank of North Idaho is now a reality and another member of the city’s newly established business concerns. Windows and counters were completely filled with over 48 beautiful baskets of flowers from well-wishers, and hundreds inspected the new institution on the opening day, Friday.

The new Jones Truck Service opened for business in a new pumice block building on the West Branch highway about three blocks north of Sam’s Corner.

In several parts of town, the European earwigs are reported as numerous and in some instances are becoming quite a nuisance.

Twister hits Humbird mill

A small twister is reported to have hit Newport Tuesday afternoon doing little damage there, but at the Humbird mill the coverings over the lumber piles were strewn about the yard. This is the first report of a wind in the nature of a twister heard in the country for some time.
