June 25, 1970 – SANDPOINT CABINET SOLD
Harlan and Margaret Walker sold the Sandpoint Cabinet Shop to Bob LaGrace and LaGrace’s brother-in-law, Gary Czarapata. The new firm will be known as LaZar Sandpoint Cabinets. The pair have purchased the former animal clinic building of the late Dr. L.F. Eakin (on the Dover highway) and will move the cabinet shop there by Aug. 1. LaGrace has been a Sandpoint resident since last October. He, his wife Joanna and children, Jesse, Celeste, Randia and Brenda, are from the Oakland area. Czarapata, also a California native with four children, is leaving an executive position in Ramsey, N.J., to come to Sandpoint.

DIMINISHING KOKANEE
The catch of kokanee in Lake Pend Oreille in 1969 was estimated at 494,358 fish, the lowest since fish census records began in 1951. The average kokanee catch for 1951-68 was 981,437. There has also been a decline in the number of commercial fishing licenses purchased. From a high of 7,991 commercial licenses in 1954, the number has steadily declined. In 1969 only 730 commercial licenses were sold.

DREISBACH PROMOTED BY DIAMOND FIRM
Philip Dreisbach was recently named northwest logging superintendent by Diamond International. Dreisbach, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Dreisbach of Hope, was born in Sandpoint and attended school here. He has been Diamond’s road construction foreman since March of 1969.

June 25, 1920 – $12,000 FIRE AT NEWPORT
The crushing mill of the Silica and Basic products company at Newport was completely destroyed by fire early Sunday morning. The loss was $12,000. As the firm has a contract with a coast company for the entire year’s output, the mill will be rebuilt at once.

SAVE SIDEWALK PLANKS
City residents are requested by the Chamber of Commerce and the Civic club to donate discarded sidewalk planks for use in connection with a bath house on the beach. The bathing beach committees of the two organizations have joined forces and opened negotiations for boat houses already constructed which could be converted into bath houses. These will be placed on floats and the approaches built on floats, and plank is needed for the walks resting on the water. People willing to donate such planks to the cause are requested to inform the Chamber of Commerce by calling, writing or phoning 317.

PLANT SPUDS NOW
No spuds in town. None in sight until July 4. Twelve thousand acres of spuds less in the northwest this year than last. Similar decreases in acreage all over the country. Have you planted a spud yet? Obey that impulse! Do it now!
