Social distancing, safety protocols help EBCL libraries reopen

| June 27, 2020 1:00 AM

The Sandpoint and Clark Fork libraries opened their doors to the public with limited hours last week, three months after closing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Even while the physical buildings were closed, lots of work was being done behind the scenes to expand and provide access to digital resources. Later, more services such as materials returns and curbside service were added. Gradually, we reintroduced other services. This cautious approach is rooted in our commitment to keep staff and patrons safe. It also allows us to gauge how to serve our patrons best in this time of rapidly changing circumstances.

Opening for a few days a week with limited services for a trial period allowed us to see what works and what could be improved before reopening to our regular scheduled hours of operations. To that end, we are grateful to patrons who provided helpful feedback. Most importantly, we appreciate the willingness of patrons who wore face coverings and observed the safety protocols required to enter the buildings and bookmobile. Thanks to them, the Sandpoint Library will reopen to its regular schedule of open hours starting next week.

“Because of you, we are able to expand our hours to serve you better,” said Library Director Ann Nichols in a statement.

Beginning Monday, June 29, the Sandpoint Library will return to its pre-closure hours. The following applies to the Sandpoint Branch Library only:

• Open six days a week; Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. (reserved for seniors and vulnerable patrons 9-10 a.m.) and Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

• Drive-up and outside book drops will be open every day starting Monday. The indoor bins will remain closed. Materials will continue to be quarantined for 72 hours.

• Curbside materials pick-up service will continue by appointment after 10 a.m. on week days only.

• Face coverings, 6-feet social distancing, and application of hand sanitizer prior to computer use are still required while inside The Library.

The Clark Fork Library temporary limited hours schedule remains in effect: open Monday and Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

We are thrilled to welcome you back to the library and are grateful to you for your support, patience, and willing observance of the measures we have in place for the health and safety of our staff and patrons. As we gradually reintroduce services, the first place we announce them is on our website. For more information, visit our updates page at www.ebonnerlibrary.org.
