June 30, 1970 – LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Our family last weekend had the good fortune to stay in your lovely city. We were much impressed with the natural scenic beauty of the area. The lake is as pretty as any I have ever seen. And my travels have taken me to Europe, Africa and the British Isles.

But Sandpoint does need to progress - there is a lack of sophistication amongst the populace. While at one of your leading restaurants, I came away with the impression that I had had dinner with the Munsters. Evidently modern day customs of diet, dress, hygene (sic) and decorum have yet to reach Sandpoint. Perhaps you could run a column on style and charm in your paper. Authored by some one in your midst who has had some outside experience. H. Oatler Briggs, Ben Avon, Pa.

ALLEGE GRAFT IN COUNTY OFFICE

A stir has been caused by allegations of graft in the office of County Superintendent of Schools Miss Gertrude LeHuquet. The first murmurs began last Saturday. The affair smacks of soap-box agitation, with a warping of the facts to the needs of political propaganda. The basis of the uproar is statements by Mrs. Ruby Cooper, who quit her job as deputy superintendent under Miss Le Huquet Saturday, to the effect that she was forced to divide an increase in salary with her superior. The amount alleged to have been extorted was $7.50 per month for three months. Mrs. Cooper claims to have cancelled checks as evidence to substantiate her charges.
