100 Years Ago — 1920

Baseball on his mind

Tommy Judge breezed into the city last Thursday and baseball seemed to be what he was chiefly interested in, although he had his sample case of shoes with him. Tommy talks baseball and sells shoes on the side. Tommy sees more victories than ever ahead for Priest River if the same bunch can be secured that played last season. P. H. Redmond, chairman of the baseball committee of the Commercial Club, is getting his plans in shape for this year’s club.

90 Years Ago — 1930

Houseboat replacement underway

A crew of workman with Bill Williams as foreman is engaged in building a houseboat at Coolin on Priest Lake for John Schaefer to replace the one which burned last year. It will be towed to a scenic spot on the lake where it will be easily accessible by motorboat.

80 Years Ago — 1940

Bowling alley sold

The bowling alley which has been operated for the past month by Lord and Orr in the old Jackson building was this week sold to Sam Montague. Mr. Montague now has Earle Clintsman operating the building.

70 Years Ago — 1950

School plan vote up again

On Tuesday, March 14, voters in Bonner County will again have the opportunity of expressing themselves on the school reorganization plan. The plan is the same as previously submitted, the one-unit system, approved by the county planning board and the State Board of Education as the most suitable for the county. State law compels reorganization.

60 Years ago — 1960

New fairgrounds purchase announced

Merle Griffith, Priest River, Bonner County fair board chairman, and Jim Mickeslon, county commissioner chairman, have announced the purchase of 40 acres for a new fairgrounds site, one mile north of the airport on North Boyer. The purchase includes a modern three-bedroom home. Total price: $22,500.

50 Years Ago — 1970

Beardmore Building sells

Final papers were signed March 17 in a transaction in which ownership of the Beardmore building passed from the Beardmore estate, handled by Mr. and Mrs. Guy McAlexander of Priest River and George Beardmore of Lewiston, to Mr. And Mrs. Gary Gornick of Priest River.

40 Years Ago — 1980

Legal ice-fishing season sought

The sportsman’s association at Priest Lake voted to ask the Idaho Fish and Game Commission to legalize ice fishing on Priest Lake, with regulations similar to those on Lake Pend Oreille. Currently, the nearest ice fishing lake to Priest Lake is Blue Lake, a small body of water nine miles northeast of Priest River. The only other ice-fishing lake in the vicinity is Pend Oreille.

30 Years Ago — 1990

Canine cop on patrol

“General,” a county police dog, and Deputy John Black make up a one-two punch which has been on duty in the Priest River for six months in an effort to utilize man’s best friend in the fight against crime.

20 Years Ago — 2000

Saturday shaping up busy

Saturday, Priest River’s first Community Resource Fair, chaired by Nancy Turner and Kay Small, will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the downtown commercial district, and the Junior Miss program will follow at 7 p.m. in the junior high auditorium.
